Suspect Used County Officer's Stolen Gun in Crime Spree: Kaupas

Will County Deputy Chief Ken Kaupas confirmed that Zeeshan Rashid used the officer's gun to allegedly shoot two men and rob two people.

A gun used in a shooting and two armed robberies was stolen from a Will County Sheriff's Department corrections officer, department spokesman Ken Kaupas confirmed.

Zeeshan Rashid and two other men are accused of breaking into the officer's home while he was on vacation June 12 and stealing his department-issued .40-caliber Glock handgun, ammunition, magazines, body armor and uniform shirts, Kaupas told the Chicago Tribune.

Rashid, 19, of 617 Fox, Joliet, was arrested June 18 in connection with a series of crimes, several of which involved the officer's gun. Among them, he allegedly shot two men in unincorporated Joliet and committed two armed robberies.

"You want to recover that weapon because you have to get a gun off the street," Kaupas told the Tribune. "We (were) very concerned that we (had) not been able to locate the weapon. You hate to know there's an unaccounted weapon out there."

Rashid was also charged with breaking into the officer's house and stealing his car, the paper reported. County deputies stopped him and two other men in the stolen car on June 12, but they were able to flee on foot.

The next day, Rashid used the gun to shoot two men on the porch of a house at 617 Algonquin. The spent casings recovered at the scene were consistent with ammunition issued by the sheriff's department, Kaupas said.

The armed robberies occurred June 15 and 17.
