Warrant Issued for Man Accused of Firing Shotgun on Hammes

A reckless conduct charge awaits a Joliet man, who was hospitalized for a mental evaluation Sunday following a standoff with police.

A man accused of firing a shotgun outside his Hammes Avenue home early Sunday morning faces a reckless conduct charge, Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said.

Benton said a warrant was issued Monday for Christopher R. Koehn, 30, who remained hospitalized Tuesday after a nearly four-hour standoff with police.

Benton said police received a call regarding shots fired at 217 Hammes Ave. at about 4:30 a.m. Sunday. He described Koehn as "despondent and armed" during the incident, saying Joliet's Special Operations Unit was unable to make contact with Koehn.

At around 8:30 a.m., police were able to enter the home and took Koehn into custody without incident. Benton said no one else was in the house when Koehn was taken into custody, but could not say whether anyone else had been at the residence earlier in the morning.

Koehn faces a reckless discharge of a firearm charge, a felony which carries a $100,000 bond.

Following the incident, Benton said Koehn was taken to Presence St. Joseph Medical Center before being transported to another hospital for further mental evaluation. The warrant was to be served upon Koehn's release.

No one was injured in the shooting, police said.
