Killer Not Happy About 'Sex Offender' Label, Would Rather Be Called 'Murderer'

A convicted murderer is not pleased that he is called a "sex offender" on the Illinois Department of Corrections website.

Convicted killer Jorge Pena is all right with being called a murderer, but he's not too happy about the Illinois Department of Corrections labeling him a sex offender on its website.

Pena, 27, filed a petition at the Will County courthouse in Joliet asking for the Department of Corrections to stop calling him a sex offender.

Pena "has not nor has ever been charged and/or convicted of any kind of 'sex offense' nor an offense that could be misconstrued as a sex offense," Pena said in his petition.

Pena was, however, convicted of murdering a teenager. In his petition, Pena said his victim was 16 when he killed him. Court papers say Pena's victim, Khalid Mohammed, was actually 15.

Pena and Mohammed were both members of the Maniac Latin Disciples street gang, according to court papers. Pena killed Mohammed after the teen shot his mouth off about Pena allegedly murdering another man, an appellate court filing said.

Pena, who is doing a 70-year sentence at Stateville Correctional Center, was 19 at the time of the killing.

Pena's petition says he has "repeatedly requested that the IDOC remove the title 'sex offender' from any and all documents, filings, websites or records" but the department has "refused to do" so.

The petition says Pena would prefer to be called a "murderer and violent offender against youth."
