Man Killed in Joliet Shooting; 'Person of Interest' in Custody: Police

Victim identified as 27-year-old Dameon Anderson.

Updated at 1:15 p.m. May 5:

Police are investigating the death of a Joliet man as a homicide, Will County Coroner Pat O'Neil's office reported early Sunday.

Dameon Anderson, 27, was pronounced dead at 3:42 a.m. in the emergency room at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, after being shot in the 0-100 block of Mississippi Avenue.

Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said police responded to a report of shots fired on Mississippi Avenue at around 3 a.m. Officers arrived and observed several subjects running from the area, he said.

"The subjects were detained, and one of them made the comment that one of the people they were with had been shot," Benton said.

Officers returned to the area of the reported shooting and found Anderson wounded in the alley behind a home at 8 Mississippi Ave.

Benton said police executed a search warrant at the home and interviewed witnesses there.

Police said the shooting occurred outside the home.

Benton said a person of interest is in custody on unrelated charges. Charges connected to the homicide are pending review and approval by the Will County State's Attorney's Office, Benton said.

Police believe Anderson knew the shooter, "but we don't know the motive yet," Benton said, adding the person of interest is not one of the people detained at the scene.

"It doesn't seem like a typical opposing-gang type of shooting," Benton said, adding he is optimistic that charges against the suspected shooter could be approved as soon as Sunday night.
