76 Grams of Pot Found in Car Stopped for Bad Turn, Police Say

Suspect Shane Mitchell also had an expired driver's license and an open bottle of beer, Joliet police said.

A Joliet man driving around with an open can of beer and an expired driver's license was also arrested for having 76 grams of cannabis, discovered when Joliet police found it tucked away in his impounded car, Cmdr. Al Roechner said.

Shane Emery Mitchell, 35, of 401 Western Ave., was stopped by officers at 4th Avenue and Grover Street at about 10:25 p.m. Thursday for making an illegal turn, Roechner said.

When they approached his Jeep, they saw Mitchell had an open bottle of Miller High Life in the cup holder, he said. When they checked his license, they found it was expired.

Mitchell was taken into custody, and his vehicle impounded. Later, when the Jeep was examined by investigators, 17 knotted plastic bags of cannabis were found inside a CD carrier under the driver's seat, Roechner said.

Mitchell was charged with manufacture/delivery of more than 30 grams of cannabis, driving with an expired license and transporting/carrying open alcoholic liquor. He is being held in the Will County jail pending a bond hearing.

According to jail records, Mitchell was arrested and charged with manufacture/delivery of 30 to 500 grams of cannabis in 2011 and with driving with a suspended license in 2009 and 2010.
