Joliet resident wins Edison International Scholarship

Samantha Moreno, student at Joliet Junior College and graduate of Joliet Township High School, has been awarded a $2,500 scholarship from Edison International, parent company of independent power producer Midwest Generation, which operates the Joliet Generating Station.

Samantha is the daughter of Daniel and Debra Moreno. Her father works as a mechanic at the Joliet Generating Station.

Samantha is among eight recipients in Illinois of Edison International’s Howard P. Allen scholarships, awarded to high school graduates planning on attending a four-year university. The scholarships recognize and reward children of employees and retirees of Edison International companies.

This fall Samantha is attending the University of Illinois at Chicago, majoring in Business Marketing. Samantha was an honor roll student at Joliet Junior College and Joliet Township High School, and enjoys playing guitar.

“We are pleased that Midwest Generation, on behalf of Edison International, can help Samantha achieve her goals,” said Joliet Station director Bill Naglosky. “We are happy to make this investment in her education and know it will yield positive results.”

Midwest Generation is a subsidiary of Edison Mission Energy, which is part of the Edison International family of companies based in Rosemead, Calif.

As an energy company, Midwest Generation is primarily in business to generate electricity to sell wholesale in the open market. One of six power plants the company operates in Illinois, Joliet has approximately 250 employees and has an electricity-generating capacity of 1,334 megawatts, enough power to meet the average needs of about 1.6 homes.
