Storm Downs Tree Limbs, Knocks Out Power

The wind through Joliet may have been clocked at 70 mph at the height of this morning's brief but strong storm, but the damage was mostly limited to fallen tree limbs and power outages, city officials said. City Arborist Jim Teiber said city crews spent the most of the day cleaning up downed tree branches. "We didn't lose a lot of trees," he said. "But this storm hit us a lot harder (than the one at the end of June); we had some major limbs go down." The reason the city doesn't typically lose a lot of trees, even in storms that produce hurricane-strength wind, is because his crews spend a good deal of time thinning out tree canopies so the wind goes through the branches rather than hitting a solid block of dense foliage, Teiber said.
