Pair Guzzle Stranger's Liquor, Trash Apartment: Cops

Joliet police are not sure what caused the two men to break into the victim's home and drink his/her alcohol other than they wanted to "party," Cmdr. Al Roechner said.

Two Joliet men broke into a stranger's apartment Saturday night, trashed the place and cut a swath through the tenant's liquor cabinet, Joliet police said. Anthony B. Pleasant, 25, and Lorenzo Puga, 26, were nabbed shortly after midnight Sunday when neighbors complained about the noise they were making and police answering the call spotted them trying to climb out a window of Apt. 208 in the 329 N. Center St. building, Cmdr. Al Roechner said. The pair had been kicked out of the apartment building earlier in the evening because they did not live there, but they returned later to kick in one of the apartment doors and make themselves at home, Roechner said. The apartment owner was not known to either man, and it's not clear why they broke in…

Man Threatens to Kill Ex after Break-in: Police

The suspect drove all the way from Rochelle to commit the burglary, and Joliet police were able to listen in on one of his threatening calls, Cmdr. Rich Demick said.

A Rochelle man who broke into his former girlfriend's Joliet apartment and then called her at work to taunt and threaten her was arrested Wednesday, Joliet Police Cmdr. Rich Demick said. Lee Owens, 42, apparently made the 140-mile round trip, arriving at the woman's home Wednesday afternoon only to be angered that she was not there, Demick said. He called her from inside the house at about 1:45 p.m. and told her, "You're lucky you're not here right now because I was going to kill you," Demick said. The woman called her current boyfriend and asked him to verify that Owens had been in the apartment before calling the police and her landlord about the damaged door. She was speaking with the police at her residence when Owens called her again …

Police Surveillance Leads to Robbery, Home Burglary, Theft Arrests

Cmdr. Rich Demick said watching two men put stolen license plates on their car allowed officers to arrest them and obtain confessions to other crimes.

A little surveillance work paid off in spades Monday night when police were able to bust two Joliet men on robbery, burglary and stolen property charges. Brian D. Pickering, 28, of 723 John St., and Christopher A. Schmidt, 30, of 418 O'Neil St., were already suspects in a Dec. 22 robbery of an 86-year-old woman when Joliet police officers Ed Johnson and Sherrie Blackburn were assigned to watch their activities Monday night. Within minutes, they witnessed the pair putting stolen license plates on their car while it was parked in the 700 block of John Street, Cmdr. Rich Demick said Tuesday. After following the men for about 40 minutes, the officers stopped them at Raynor and Buell avenues and arrested Schmidt on a charge of unlawful …

TV 'Invited' Burglar to Enter Building: Police

Michael Kay is accused of disconnecting the power and attempting to push his way into an apartment before Joliet police arrived to arrest him, reports said.

A burglary suspect told Joliet police he wasn't as much breaking into an apartment building early Saturday morning as coming in on an invitation -- one issued by the television inside. "He made a statement to officers that he saw the TV on inside and it told him to come in," Police Cmdr. Rich Demick said. Regardless of the invitation, the doors were locked and police say Michael Kay, 25, forced his way into the 1022 Kelly Ave. building at about 1:50 a.m.. He then removed fuses to disconnect the electricty and attempted to push his way into an apartment. The first-floor residents told police that shortly after the electricty went out, they heard someone coming up the basement stairs, Demick said. Kay tried to come in through their apartment…

Man Nabbed Burgling Joliet Home, Cops Say

Police say a neighbor spotted the break-in in progress, allowing them to capture Larry Williams in the act of burglarizing a house.

An alert neighbor who spotted a man breaking into a Joliet home gave police the opportunity to nab the suspect in the act, Joliet police Cmdr. Al Roechner said. Larry Darnell Williams, 47, of 14 Bradford, unincorporated Joliet, was arrested and charged with residential burglary shortly after 2 p.m. Monday when police took him into custody at the 260 Bridge St. home he was allegedly in the process of looting, Roechner said. Williams is accused of riding his bike to the home, parking it out front and then kicking in the front door to gain access, he said. A neighbor who called the police after observing the situation gave officers the opportunity to surround the house and demand that Williams come out, Roechner said. He did so without …

Car ID Leads to Burglary Bust, Joliet Police Say

The victims of the break-in spotted Deshawn Matthews jumping into a vehicle and were able to describe it to officers, Cmdr. Rich Demick said.

A good description of the getaway car was all Joliet police needed Sunday to track down a man accused of burglarizing a local home. Deshawn Matthews, 21, of 217 3rd Ave., Joliet, was arrested just a short time after he was observed fleeing from a house in the 400 block of Grant Street at about 6:20 p.m. by the returning residents, Joliet police Cmdr. Rich Demick said. Matthews jumped into the rear of a car being driven by some friends, but not before the victims were able to get a good look at the vehicle and give the details to the police, Demick said. A short time later, Officer Jamere Price saw a car matching the description and pulled it over, prompting Matthews to take off running, Demick said. Price caught him, took him into custody …
