Harper: Transition to Common Core Standards Starts Next Fall

District 202 Superintendent John Harper's last column of the school year.

This time of year is filled with important transitions for students -- from grade to grade, level to level and from high school to college, the workplace, the military or some other life path.  Next fall, District 202 itself also faces one of the most important changes in the history of public education when the national Common Core Learning Standards will start to replace the state learning standards. The Common Core Standards for Math will be implemented in District 202 next school year. Common Core Learning Standards for Language Arts will follow in 2014-15.  We have talked a lot this year about the change to Common Core Standards. This shift will significantly impact our students, school district and community. It is very important …

Kremer: JCA Finally Ready to Make Some Baseball Noise

Joliet Catholic Academy has been up-and-down for much of the baseball season, much like the weather, but has hit its stride as of late because of timely pitching and improved defense.

Earlier this spring cold, wet weather made it difficult to grip a bat, say nothing of hitting a fastball. Joliet Catholic Academy’s baseball team scuffled. The Hilltoppers’ offense was inconsistent and their schedule was daunting. For every big win their was an equally gut-wrenching loss and not always the one that stared back at the Hill on the scoreboard. JCA lost a string of players to illness and injury. Matt Testa (elbow), Ryan Bannon (wrist), Zach Jackovich (mono), Brock Pluth (knee injury), Nick Dalesandro (wrist), and Cal Placher (arm) all were sidelined for extended stretches, some for the season. Joliet Catholic Academy coach Jared Voss could have made excuses for the Hilltoppers, who climbed to 19-14 with a 5-1 victory over Oak …

At least Rumsfeld made sure his ambassadors were well protected, didn't point fingers at others when things went wrong, and had the respect for his country by writing a resignation letter immediately after the incident in the prison camp under his command yet had no connection with the rogue soldiers. Donald Rumsfeld is a great American.   more ›

Kremer: You'll Be Rooting for These 2 Slammers Pitchers

Evan Anundsen and Jacob Sanchez represent what Frontier League Baseball is all about—a chance to get noticed or find redemption. The two will suit up for the Slammers' season-opener on Friday night at Silver Cross Field.

Let me introduce you to two young, professional ballplayers who epitomize what independent baseball is all about. Both are pitchers with the Joliet Slammers in the Frontier League ranks. Let me remind you the Slammers, with a new ownership group in place and a new manager in the dugout, open regular-season play against the Traverse City Beach Bums on Friday night. Joliet mayor Tom Giarrante will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Silver Cross Field. Action begins at 7:05. You’ll want to keep a close eye on the two men who stand at the head of the Slammers’ rotation, right-handers Evan Anundsen and Jacob Sanchez. Anundsen will start vs. the Beach Bums. He once was a fourth-round draft pick of the Milwaukee Brewers. He spent seven …

Tough Week? Here's Some Inspiration to Get You to the Weekend

It's been a long week. You need a pick-me-up.

Friday's here. Thank goodness. One more day of work, and that's it. Here's a little inspiration to get you through to Saturday.  For more than a month now, Patch and Grape-Nuts have teamed up to present stories about your neighbors, neighbors who have faced challenges that would seem insurmountable to many of us.  But not to the people we've featured in this series, Journeys. Not surprisingly, the stories have generated dozens of comments on Patch and on Facebook: "Great story..." "Thanks for sharing..." "So wonderfully inspiring..."  And, so, here they are again. Great stories shared to inspire. Take a look at what these people have faced. Then click on the story to see their responses. And feel better about your tough week. Pit Bull …

Retiring at 50: Could You Follow This Woman's Extreme Savings Plan?

Here's the story of Marlene Konkoly, who found creative ways to spend less and save more so she can retire at 50. This story is the first in our series about Extreme Savers.

Americans may be living longer, but our retirement plans aren’t keeping up. Which means people are living longer with smaller bank accounts. But Marlene Konkoly will retire at age 50. How did she do it? She contributes a whopping 45 percent of the gross annual income she earns as a procurement officer for an automotive finance company to her retirement—all while owning a home and remaining debt-free. Konkoly is actually well ahead of the retirement savings curve compared to many of her fellow Americans. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, fewer than half of Americans even know how much money they would need to retire. And nearly a third of employees who had access to a defined contribution plan such as a 401(k) did not participate …

Why is there anything wrong with the way this woman is living her life? That's great for her if she can retire at 50, and if her story can help others in a similar lifestyle situation, that's great too. I do agree retirement at 50 is a lot easier with no children though. Those of us who have children obviously have different interests and priorities (I said different not better), and as a result …   more ›
