Retired Illinois State Police Sgt. Patrick Collins has already testified that he had never investigated a homicide in his 22 years as a detective when he was called to the home of Kathleen Savio in March 2004. Savio was lifeless in a dry bathtub, but her death would not become Collins' first homicide case—within a half hour of arriving at her home, Collins said, he and two other investigators decided Savio's was the victim of an accident.
