IF WE RID THE SOCEITY OF BLACK STREET CRIME WOULD WE BE SAFE

Many of us fear robbery, rape and murder.   These are violent "street crimes." For most people, these are the only crimes that they identify as affecting their life.

Most people are not familiar with white collar crimes and the affect it has on their lives.

Even when thinking of the cost of street crime, most people do not have a clue that white collar crime costs more and has more victims. As well, white collar crime, despite popular perception, has physical harm to its victims. 

Most corporations have what they call “Bean Counters”.  These are the accountants and lawyers who hold strategy meetings when a company manufactures a product which has possible (or known) dangers that may even be life threatening, to the consumer.  The “Bean Counter’s” job is to determine rather it would be “less costly” to the company to recall the defective product, or to pay out the possible litigation costs from the injury or deaths of the consumer from using that defective product.

For instance, if an auto manufacturer produces a few thousand autos that have a defect in the breaking mechanism, and it could cost them a billion dollars to recall it, but their “Bean Counters” predict that they would ultimately pay out only a few hundred million in possible law litigation….then they will go with the latter and not recall and repair the defective break mechanism unless it is brought back in on warranty—which is already paid for in the price of the car.

But if you or your loved one is killed in an auto accident due to a faulty break function, you are just as dead as if you had been killed by a gangbanger in a robbery.  So if you are killed by a gun, or poison in the food, you are still just as dead.

The range of white collar crimes is awesome, it can result in the loss of one’s home, medical payments on health insurance, pensions and life’s savings.  White collar crime has indirect results in bodily harm and death from the use of any number of various products, equipment and machinery.

The cost of prosecuting white collar criminals is usually more, because they usual have highly paid and highly skilled lawyers rather than public defenders.  If convicted, the courts do usually receive some of the expenses back as most White collar criminals are usually made to pay fines and court cost rather than sent to prison.

Remember the government financial “Melt Down” when the tax payer paid out about a hundred billion dollars?  No one went to prison for any of that.  But millions of people were adversely affected just as harmfully as if they had been robbed.  Some of them probably would have preferred to had been robbed of a few hundred, or even a few thousands of dollars than to have suffered the financial loss that they experienced.
