Giarrante to Nominate Replacement for Susie Barber on Tuesday

The city council has 30 days to accept or reject Giarrante's pick to represent District 4.

Joliet Mayor Tom Giarrante is scheduled to make his pick for the new District 4 representative at Tuesday night's city council meeting.

Ailing City Councilwoman Susie Barber resigned on March 5, citing health reasons. She had not attended a city council meeting since August 2013, when she was taken from City Hall via ambulance.

Giarrante is looking to get city council approval for his pick at the Tuesday night city council meeting, although the council has 30 days to approve or reject the nominee.

If his pick doesn't win the support of a simple majority, Giarrante would have to choose a second nominee. If the council rejects the second pick, the mayor could then temporarily appoint one of the two nominees to the position without council approval.

The temporary appointment would remain in effect until another mayoral nominee wins a simple majority vote from the city council or the position is filled via election.

The new city council member will serve out the remainder of Barber's term. The District 4 seat will be up for election again in April 2015.

To be eligible, nominees must have lived in District 4, located on Joliet's east side, for at least one year and be able to vote in city elections.

The city council meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 150 W. Jefferson St.
