Downtown Joliet Parking Meters Losing Money: City

Should the city get rid of the meters? Share your input by taking a downtown parking survey.

You may soon be able to stop feeding the meters in downtown Joliet.

New City Manager Jim Hock told WJOL's Scott Slocum that the meters aren't bringing in revenue — they're actually costing the city money.

Currently, the meters only take quarters, and the city is losing money on them, Hock told WJOL.

Consulting firm Rich & Associates is conducting a six-week study aimed at turning parking into a revenue source for Joliet.

The city is also asking for input from residents who work or visit downtown. Click here to complete Joliet's downtown parking survey.

Metered parking is enforced from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays and costs between 50 cents and $1 per hour, depending on location.

In addition to the metered, on-street parking, the city also has parking decks at 110 N. Ottawa St. and 11 E. Clinton St. (known as the Scott Street Parking Deck) for 50 cents/hour or a $3 flat rate for special events. There's also the Union Station lot west of the train station and near the Will County Courthouse. Click for more info on downtown Joliet parking.

You turn: Should Joliet do away with the meters? How can the city improve the parking situation downtown?
