Applicants for Regional School Supt. Sought

Criteria for the job includes being a Democrat as well as having a master's degree, being certified as a teacher or administrator, and having teaching experience.

Applications are being accepted from candidates who would like to assume the Will County regional superintendent of schools position, which had been filled by newly elected state Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant (D-49).

Will County Executive Larry Walsh and county board member Joe Babich, who chairs the board's health and public safety committee, are forming an advisory group to review the applications and conduct interviews, according to a news release from Walsh.

Under state law, Bertino-Tarrant's successor must be a Democrat as she was elected from that party.

Other qualifications required under state law are that the person:

  • Be of good character;
  • Have a master's degree;
  • Have earned at least 20 semester hours of credit in professional education at the graduate level;
  • Hold a valid all grade supervisory certificate, a valid state limited supervisory certificate, a valid state life supervisory certificate or a valid administrative certificate;
  • Have had at least four years' teaching experience;
  • Spent at least two of the four previous years in full-time teaching or supervising in the common public schools or serving as a county superintendent of schools or regional superintendent of schools for an educational service region in the state of Illinois.

Applicants should send a letter of interest and their credentials to the County Executive’s office, c/o ROE Search, 302 N. Chicago St., Joliet, IL 60435, by Feb. 4, 2013.

Advisory committee members will interview the applicants and make a recommendation to Walsh, the release said. In turn, Walsh will present a nomination to the Will County Boardfor confirmation.

The Regional Offices of Education in Will and other Illinois counties serve as intermediate agencies between the Illinois State Board of Education and local school districts. The office administers several special programs, including truancy prevention, GED testing, life safety inspections of school buildings, bus driver training and continuing education for teachers and administrators.

During past year, the office also has assisted local school districts by fingerprinting new employees in compliance with a new state law.

Looks like a redundant layer to me...and something the state of Illinois can not afford. Here's an idea... eliminate the position.

I like that idea, DK. It's too bad Bertino-Tarrant has a history of lying, which she may continue in her newly elected position. She is not to be trusted.

Christine, that's a pretty powerful allegation. What do you have to back it up?
