Woman Says 2-by-4 Attack Spurred by Drug Debt: Police

Gloria Spiva told police that she broke car windows and items belonging to a Joliet man because he owed her $500 for crack cocaine, Joliet police said.

Wednesday night, Gloria Spiva found herself on the receiving end of violence at the hands of her brother, who allegedly tried to strangle her, Joliet police said.

Two days later, it was she who was doling out the punishment to someone else, armed with a 2-by-4 piece of wood and angry that she'd been stiffed in a crack cocaine deal, according to Joliet Cmdr. Al Roechner.

Spiva, 53, of 210 N. Broadway, Joliet, is accused of going to an apartment complex at 407 N. Bluff at about 3 p.m. Friday and bashing in the windows of a tenant's car, Roechner said. She then went to the victim's apartment and started throwing items and breaking glass, he said.

When police arrived, Spiva immediately admitted her guilt, he said.

"I did it," she told officers, according to police reports. "Handcuff me and take me to jail."

The man allegedly failed to pay her $500 for crack cocaine she had supplied him with, she told police.

Only two days earlier, Spiva's brother was at her home and the pair got into a fight, according to reports. Charles Spiva Jr., 50, of 311 Ottawa St., is accused of kicking his sister and attempting to choke her, and then turning on two people who tried to intervene, Roechner said.

Spiva Jr. was arrested and charged with aggravated domestic violence. His sister is facing charges of felony criminal damage to property.

According to Will County jail records, Gloria Spiva has been arrested several times in the past. Charges include violation of an order of protection, battery, assault and theft in August 2011, knowingly damaging property and battery in May 2011, criminal damage to property and aggravated battery in August 2008 and battery in August 2008.
