An "unruly" customer who complained about having to walk home in the cold after being thrown out of a bar solved her dilemma Saturday by stealing a car that was warming up outside, Joliet Police Cmdr. Al Roechner said.
The incident began shortly after midnight when a patron at Woody's Bar, 1008 E. Washington, asked a fellow customer to help her jump-start her car, Roechner said. Once the engine was running, the owner decided to let it warm up and went back into the bar for a few minutes, he said.
Simultaneous to that, a Woody's employee was in the process of asking Kellie L. Brockett, 31, of 1404 E. 5th Ave., to leave the bar because she was becoming disruptive, Roechner said. The woman was angry and reportedly complained about not wanting to go out in the cold, he said.
When the car went missing shortly thereafter, the employee suggested that Brockett may have taken it, Roechner said.
About 20 minutes later, police officers spotted the stolen car and took Brockett into custody. The back window of the car was broken, apparently shattered when Brockett allegedly backed into a pole as she was leaving the bar's parking lot, Roechner said.
Brockett was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, driving on a revoked license and leaving the scene of an accident. She is being held in the Will County jail in lieu of $100,000 bond.
According to jail records, which are incomplete, Brockett has been arrested at least twice for driving under the influence of alcohol -- once in October 2009 and again in November 2009.
