Short Lockdown at Hufford School Triggered by 'Stranger': Police

A teacher triggered the alarm when an unidentified man, later found to be the district's maintenance supervisor, was spotted in the building, Joliet police said.

Hufford Junior School went into lockdown this morning after a teacher spotted an unidentified man in the building, Joliet police said.

The man was later identified as Joliet Grade School District 86's maintenance supervisor, who was in the 1125 N. Larkin Ave. building without proper identification displayed, Police Cmdr. Al Roechner said.

Police surrounded the school with squad cars at about 8:20 a.m. after being alerted that a strange man was in the building, he said. Several officers were seen holding rifles, which alarmed parents, who contacted Joliet Patch.

Roechner said police followed the procedures in place for a lockdown, but the action was short-lived once they were able to identify the man, whom the teacher did not know.
