Road Rager Pulls Gun, Flees Cops, Drives Car on Sidewalk Before Caught: Police

A Joliet ex-con allegedly led police on a chase around town after pulling a gun on another driver.

A Joliet ex-con pulled a gun during a traffic dispute, then took off from the cops before running out of road and driving up on a sidewalk, police said.

Gerardo Gutierrez, 20, of 105 S. Midland Ave. was charged with aggravated assault with a firearm, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a street gang member, aggravated fleeing and attempting to elude, and obstructing a peace officer in connection with the 7:15 p.m. Tuesday incident that started near the corner of Essington Road and Ingalls Avenue.

A driver reportedly told police he honked his horn at Gutierrez when he took too long to turn left at an intersection. After some jockeying in traffic, police said, Gutierrez pulled his blue Nissan alongside the other driver's car and told him, "You don't know who I am, bro." He then allegedly pulled a pistol.

The other driver called the police. Cops in the area reportedly spotted Gutierrez's Nissan and tried to pull him over but he took off.

Gutierrez got stuck in traffic but drove up on a sidewalk before he was finally stopped in the 1200 block of Clara Avenue.

Gutierrez, incidentally, was charged with breaking into a house in the 1200 block of Clara in 2010. The case was dismissed after he pleaded guilty to another burglary and sentenced to prison.

Gutierrez tossed his pistol—a Beretta .32-caliber—but the cops found it in a front yard on Lemorr Avenue, police said. The gun was reportedly loaded with five bullets.
