Pit Bull Vigilante Shot at Dog from Moving Car: Police
The suspect told Joliet police he fired several rounds in an attempt to stop the dog, which he said had killed several neighborhood animals.
A man who tried to shoot a pit bull while chasing the unleashed animal in his SUV was arrested Saturday on several gun-related charges, Joliet Police Capt. Tab Jensen said.
Terrance A. Jones, 49, of Laurel, Miss., was arrested at about 1 p.m. near the area of Patterson and Joliet streets after police received several calls about a man firing a gun at a dog while driving, Jensen said.
Jones told officers he wanted to shoot the pit bull, which had no collar and appeared to be wild, because he had seen it kill several animals over the course of two days, including a cat in the yard of the house where he was staying. It was the cat attack that prompted him to get into his vehicle and chase the dog for several blocks, Jensen said.
Jones fired several rounds but it's not believed he struck the animal or did any property damage, he said. Joliet Township Animal Control was unsuccessful in locating the pit bull, he said.
In addition to being charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and felon in possession of a weapon, Jones also faces charges of possession of 2.5 to 10 grams of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia in connection with items found when he was arrested.
He is being held in the Will County jail in lieu of $30,000 bond.
