Moms Solve Crimes by Reporting Sons as Suspects, Police Say

In unrelated cases, two women made their children confess to their roles in home burglaries, Joliet Police Cmdr. Al Roechner said.

Two unrelated Joliet home burglaries were solved Tuesday when mothers handed over their children as suspects, Joliet Police Cmdr. Al Roechner said.

The first case occurred at about 2 a.m. when the victim returned to their 325 S. Des Plaines St. home to find it ransacked and several items, including a widescreen television, PlayStation game unit, seven video games, DVD player and DVDs, and Gucci purse, stolen, Roechner said.

As police were on the scene, a neighbor appeared with her 11-year-old son and told officers she believed the boy was responsible for the burglary, he said. She was tipped off, she said, when she found several items under his bed that she knew he did not own, he said.

The boy confessed to the break-in and implicated two friends, ages 14 and 16. All three were arrested on charges of residential burglary and possession of stolen property and taken to the River Valley Juvenile Justice Center, Roechner said.

An almost identical scenario played out at about 7:20 a.m. Tuesday when the residents at 424 Prior St. reported that their house had been burglarized and a Samsung computer tablet and $300 taken, Roechner said.

Several hours later, the victim called the police to say a woman, her son and two friends were on his doorstep and confessing to the crime, he said.

The three boys, ages 14 and 15, admitted they got into the house through a window and stole the computer and cash, he said. They used the latter buying items at a store at Western Avenue and Hickory Street in Joliet, he said.

All three were charged with residential burglary and taken to the juvenile detention center.
