Man who Lived with Corpse Girlfriend Gets Prison Term

Derek Tanke used the deceased woman's ATM card to buy vodka and pay for the room where they were staying, a prosecutor said.

A man who obtained cash from his girlfriend's ATM card to buy vodka while she lay dead in their motel bed for two days will be spending 1.5 years in prison.

Derek A. Tanke, 43, pleaded guilty to concealment of a death and unlawful use of a credit card in connection with the death of Nancy A. Johnston, 54, which whom he had been sharing a room at the Bel-Air Motel, 1103 Plainfield Road, according to a story published by Sun-Times Media.

It's believed Johnston died on Feb. 15, but Tanke did not call police until two days later, the story said. The pair had spent weeks at the hotel, drinking vodka and passing out, the prosecutor said, according to the story.
