Man Pushed Pregnant Niece to Ground in Cell Phone Fight: Police

William Wells Jr. is accused of slapping and pushing the victim because he wanted her to get off the phone, Joliet police said.

A Joliet man slapped his 6-months-pregnant niece and pushed her to the ground Thursday night because she wouldn't stop talking on her cell phone, Joliet police said.

The victim told police her uncle, William T. Wells Jr., 48, became angry because she was on the phone too long and began yelling at her, Cmdr. Al Roechner said. When she tried to leave their 1341 Englewood house, Wells allegedly slapped and scratched her and shoved her to the ground, he said.

Officers arrived at about 11:55 p.m. and took Wells into custody on charges of aggravated battery and domestic battery. He is being held in the Will County jail pending a bond hearing.

Wells has a long criminal history that includes 10 arrests on domestic battery charges as well as arrests for violating an order of protection, criminal trespass, knowingly damaging property and criminal drug conspiracy, according to Will County circuit clerk records.
