Man in Stolen Car Takes Joliet Police on High-Speed Chase

The car being driven by Kenneth Harris had been reported missing Tuesday morning, Joliet Police Cmdr. Al Roechner said.

A Joliet man who took police on a high-speed chase in a stolen car was arrested Tuesday night, officials said.

Kenneth Harris, 33, of 1211 Arthur Ave., was spotted in the 2000 Buick Century, which had been reported stolen earlier in the day, in the area of Charlesworth and Woodruff at about 10:10 p.m., Joliet Police Cmdr. Al Roechner said.

Police attempted to stop Harris, but he instead started driving faster, going through three stop signs before abandoning the car in the 700 block of Chase, fleeing on foot and being stopped by officers, Roechner said.

Harris told investigators he had been snorting cocaine with a friend whom he said gave him the car.

The vehicle had been reported stolen Tuesday morning from the 200 block of North Hickory, Roechner said. The owner told police she'd left the car running in front of her house in order to warm it up, and that it was gone when she returned, he said.

Harris was charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle, aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude police, driving on a suspended license and obstructing a peace officer.

He is being held in the Will County jail pending a bond hearing.
