Man Held for Beating Grandfather, Police Say

Willie Waddell, who was out on parole, was angry his grandfather asked him to leave his house, Joliet police said.

A Joliet man who struck his grandfather in the head with a blunt object when the older man asked him to leave his house has been charged with aggravated battery to a senior, Joliet Police Capt. Les O'Connor said.

A warrant for the arrest of Willie Waddell, 25, of 716 Grant St., was issued after Joliet police were called at about the attack at about 8:30 p.m. May 21, O'Connor said. Although the victim declined to be taken to the hospital, it was observed that his head was cut and bruised, he said.

No information was available on what the pair were fighting about, why the 71-year-old grandfather wanted him out of the house or if there was history of disagreements between the two, he said.

Waddell was arrested about 2 a.m. today in the 500 block of Campbell.

In addition to aggravated battery to a senior, Waddell also faces aggravated battery and criminal damage to property charges and a parole violation. According to Illinois Department of Corrections records, Waddell was released in April 2012 after serving about half of a two-year prison sentence for manufacture/delivery of 1 to 15 grams of cocaine.

Waddell is being held in the Will County jail in lieu of $50,000 bond.
