Man Chokes 1-Day Girlfriend after She's Texted by Ex: Police

Broderick Evans reacted with jealous anger because a woman he'd just met and started having sex with received a message from a former boyfriend, Joliet police said.

A Joliet man pummeled and choked a woman he'd just met and had sex with after she received a text message from a former boyfriend, Joliet Police Cmdr. Al Roechner said.

The pair were walking in the 800 block of Plainfield Road at about 2 a.m. Tuesday when the woman received the message that sent Broderick Evans, 29, of 10 E. Zarley Blvd., into an angry fit, Roechner said. After viewing the message, Broderick allegedly grabbed the woman's phone and then punched her to the ground, climbed on top of her and attempted to strangle her, he said.

The woman was able to free herself and flagged down a passing squad car. The officers, noting bruises on the woman's face and neck, took Evans into custody and charged him with aggravated domestic battery, Roechner said.

The victim told police she'd know Evans for less than a day but the two had started a romantic relationship in which they'd had sex twice before Evans attacked her, Roechner said.

In addition to the aggravated battery charge, Evans was also charged with violating the terms of his parole. Evans was released from Stateville Correctional Center in July 2012 after serving two years of a four-year term for manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance and felon in possession of a firearm, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections.
