Man Bites Off Estranged Wife's Fingertip in Fight, Police Say

Eric Woods Sr. is also accused of injuring his two daughters in the domestic battery incident, according to Joliet police.

A Joliet man who bit off the top of his estranged wife's index finger after she sprayed him with Mace was arrested Monday afternoon and charged with aggravated domestic battery, Joliet Police Cmdr. Al Roechner said.

Police were called to the victim's home in the 1500 block of Demmond Court at about 4 p.m. following a physical fight between the woman and Eric S. Woods Sr., 27, Roechner said.

According to her account, Woods came to her house and an argument ensued that became physical, he said. He allegedly punched her in the head, pulled her hair and started to throw things around the house.

The couple's two daughters, ages 7 and 15, were also pushed and struck, Roechner said.

When Woods' wife was able to retrieve a can of Mace and spray it at him, he followed her outside the house, pushed her to the ground, climbed on top of her and bit off the top of her right index finger, Roechner said. He then left the scene.

Police officers retrieved the finger tip in the driveway, and the woman was transported to Silver Cross Hospital for treatment, as was the younger daughter. The old daughter complained about being sore but declined medical attention, Roechner said.

Woods was arrested at his 821 2nd Ave. home at about 5:40 p.m. In addition to being charged with aggravated battery, he also faces two counts of domestic battery for striking his daughters, Roechner said.

Woods is being held in the Will County jail.
