Matthew Thom went to a Joliet Township house on the pretense of needing cab fare and then pushed his way, a Will County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman said.

A Joliet man who forced his way into the home of an elderly couple on the pretense that he and his mother needed cab fare only to attack them and steal $10 was arrested on a slew of felony charges Thursday.

Matthew Thom, 30, of 4429 Timber Ridge, went to the house in the 1700 block of Aspen Lane in Joliet Township at about 12:40 a.m. Wednesday, Will County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said.

When the 69-year-old female resident answered the door, Thom told her that he and his mother lived in the area and needed cab fare, Hoffmeyer said. She told him she didn't have any money, but her 74-year-old male friend came to the door and offered him $10, she said.

At that point, Thom pushed his way into the home, shoving the woman down and causing her to strike her head on the hardwood floor, Hoffmeyer said. He punched the man in the face, pushed him to the floor and forcibly took the $10 bill out of his hand, she said.

A third resident -- a 27-year-old man -- came downstairs to investigate the commotion and he, too, was punched in the face. When Thom decided to flee, the man pursued him and got a description and license plate number of the vehicle he left in as well as a good look at the female driver, Hoffmeyer said.

Crest Hill police made a traffic stop on the vehicle at about 1:35 a.m. Thursday and notified the sheriff's office that the driver matched the description of the woman who helped Thom get away the previous day, she said.

Deputies spoke to the woman, who voluntarily came to the sheriff's office to be interviewed, Hoffmeyer said. While there, she admitted that Thom was waiting for her outside in her car and he was brought in for questioning as well, she said.

Thom was later taken into custody and charged with two counts of aggravated battery to a senior citizen, two counts of aggravated battery and one count each of home invasion, residential burglary and battery.

The female victim was transported to Silver Cross Hospital by the East Joliet Fire Department for treatment of a broken tailbone and head bruising, Hoffmeyer said. The men also went to Silver Cross after speaking with deputies, with the elder victim requiring treatment for injuries to his hand and face.

Thom is being held in the Will County jail in lieu of $500,000 bond. According to jail records, he was also arrested in June on charges of burglary and criminal trespass to residence.

Does not surprise me at all! POS! FYI he does NOT live on Timber Ridge Ct and has NOT for several years. He was evicted when he went into foreclosure because he started doing bath salts and acting like a crazy person. Actually he was on the Morning Star mission flyer last year with some BS story of being down on his luck. Nope he chose to do bath salts. Bath salts= loss of wife, loss of kid, loss of home, stay away from drugs kids or this is what you become!

Life is a game of survival..survive...Means don't open e door to people who just want to borrow money that you don't know..Your either dealing with a drug addict or a dangerous person...Most people that need money for gas that are normal..have friends and family and rides to places or someone to help them..If they do not have friends and family and have to knock on your door to borrow money then you have to ask yourself..what did is person do to not have anyone?..If you do not and ignore this..you end up with a crazed person in your home...Your decisions to open the door and even pull money out well you know the consequences for that..from a parking lot to your home...Everyone's got a story...it's the rest of the story they do not tell you that will get you caught up..just be smart and survive...you have to get to that elder way of thinking..and that's F people and their dumb crap...sorry to say as it is your decisions is the reason there are victims...I am 39 if I don't know you I open my door with my foot behind it,a bat...or I open a window to speak to them...I don't listen to any stories, religious or sad story...you got no business at my house.
Stephanie October 26, 2013 at 12:19 PM

Herc October 26, 2013 at 12:26 PM

Shantel October 26, 2013 at 03:55 PM

The Sofa King October 26, 2013 at 04:39 PM
Concealed Carry. Criminals need to be sent back to their families in body bags.
JtwnStunna October 26, 2013 at 05:19 PM
Clutche lol, and I think BKells comes on here just to read Hercs comments, accuse ppl of being racist and then posting racist comments himself..
Peggy Jones October 26, 2013 at 05:25 PM
I want to kick the crap out of this guy and his date but more than that I would like to find the drug dealer and whom ever got him started on this path. As said in a previous post he once had a family and a real life. sick of rap songs about drugs, killing, and all the other now accepted things in some cultures.
Charli October 26, 2013 at 05:25 PM
This is terrible, so he just wanted to hit the older couple! He was being handed the money! I wish the 27 year old would've caught him & beat the crap out of him!
Kelly O' October 26, 2013 at 10:12 PM
Bkellz, lately you're the only person posting racist remarks. You seem to be trying to bait Herc into making racist statements. Please stop.
JtwnStunna October 26, 2013 at 11:28 PM
My point exactly, Kelly.. smh
John October 27, 2013 at 07:56 AM
OK, so i have to ask...If he was arrested in June for burglary and criminal trespass, why wasn't he either in jail or prison. Was someone stupid enough to bail him out, or is this another example of failure in our Court system. Do all of us a favor and LOCK HIM UP for good this time would ya!
Bob Draznik October 27, 2013 at 08:32 AM
I agree with you John
Mike October 27, 2013 at 09:48 AM
I'M THE HOMEOWNER: THE WILL COUNTY POLICE WERE PROFESSIONAL AND WONDERFUL. THEY DID A GREAT JOB OF INVESTIGATION AND CLOSURE. IT'S NOW UP TO THE COURT SYSTEM TO "REHABILITATE" THIS PERSON... THIS IS WHERE OUR CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM FALLS SHORT. IT ISN'T DESIGNED TO RE-EDUCATE OR REHABILITATE ANYONE. IT "CHEAPS OUT". MAYBE NOTHING CAN BE DONE FOR A SOCIOPATH ANYWAY. IT MUST NOT BE WORTH THE TROUBLE.
Sandra October 27, 2013 at 12:02 PM
This asshole is lower than worm shit!
William Layette October 27, 2013 at 02:08 PM
This guy needs to be flushed.

Not to worry, chump. You'll be out on the street in no time, thanks to your sleezy defense attorney & a-hole judge.
Brad Sewell November 04, 2013 at 10:35 PM
