Man Beats Girlfriend for Leaving Kids Home Alone: Police

Mario Carrasco-Ronquillo was charged with aggravated domestic battery after allegedly attacking his girlfriend while she slept, Joliet police said.

A Joliet man, apparently angry that his girlfriend would leave three children home alone while she ran out for groceries, got drunk early Sunday morning and attacked the woman while she slept, Joliet police said.

Mario Carrasco-Ronquillo, 35, was charged with aggravated domestic battery and resisting a peace officer at about 3:30 a.m. after his girlfriend was able to escape their 704 Garnsey Ave. home and call police, Cmdr. Al Roechner said.

Carrasco-Ronquillo's attack was apparently triggered by an incident on Saturday night, when he returned home at about 7 p.m. and found the woman's three children -- one of whom they have together -- left alone while she went out to get groceries, Roechner said. The children are ages 11, 7 and 2.

The couple argued, and Carrasco-Ronquillo went out and got intoxicated, Roechner said.

When he returned at about 3 a.m., he began strangling his girlfriend while she slept, he said. He also allegedly punched her in the face four or five times and in the back of the head as she fled the house, he said.

Police, noting the marks on the victim's face and neck and the scratches on her arms, took Carrasco-Ronquillo into custody, Roechner said. The woman declined medical treatment.

Carrasco-Ronquillo is being held in the Will County jail pending a bond hearing. He is also being held on a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement order, according to Will County records.
