Lawsuit Against Joliet Company Alleges Racial Harassment
The lawsuit said the employee was subjected to racial slurs, had a concrete block thrown at him and was hit with a board.
The former employee of a Joliet company filed a lawsuit alleging racial harassment and physical abuse.
Joseph R. Love said he was subjected to the mistreatment from December 2010 until he was fired by CR Coatings & Logistics in June 2012.
The day after Love was hired as a paint line operator, the lawsuit said, his supervisor asked him, "How did you end up in the first shift when all the blacks are on the third shift and in the wash area?" the lawsuit said.
The lawsuit also said Love was called a racial slur in Spanish and "non-African-American employees continually referred to (him) as 'n-----.'"
When Love complained to his supervisor, the lawsuit said, he was told "he needed to learn to 'relax' and that the co-workers 'were joking.'"
In June 2011, the lawsuit said, a co-worker called love a racial slur and "threw a cement block at (his) head." The same co-worker "again attacked Love by hitting him with a wood board," the lawsuit said.
Love originally filed his lawsuit in Kane County but it was transferred to Will County.
