Joliet Teen Throws Gang Signs, Shoots Bullets: Cops

The teen was arrested after attempting to take refuge in a Jackson Street apartment, police said.

A Joliet teen threw gang signs at the occupants of a passing Cadillac, police said, then ran into an apartment building, emerged with a pistol and opened fire on the car.

No one was injured in the Friday morning shooting, police said. A 16-year-old was charged with the aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, defacing the identification marks on a firearm, mob action, and the possession of cannabis. He was booked into River Valley Juvenile Detention Center.

The 16-year-old, another teen and 20-year-old James Fox of 713 E. Jackson St. all were hanging out on the corner of Jackson and Henderson Avenue when a Cadillac came past, police said.

The three on the corner and the occupants of the Cadillac exchanged gang signs, police said. One of the men in the Cadillac then got out with a crowbar.

The 16-year-old ran into the apartment building, came out with the gun and started shooting, police said. He and the other two then ran back into the building.

The police showed up and reportedly obtained consent to search the apartment from the mother of one of the three who was on the corner. The officers found the three young men in the apartment and a .22-caliber pistol, police said.

All three of the young men were taken to the police station. The other teen was charged with possession of cannabis and released on a juvenile contact form. Fox was charged with mob action and possession of cannabis. He was released on his own recognizance.
