Police File Charges in Unsolved Murder

Jevon Lesley is accused of spraying a crowd with bullets, killing Joliet West High School student Anthony Fearn in July 2011.

For the second time in two weeks, the Joliet Police Department has made an arrest in an unsolved murder case.

A warrant was issued Tuesday for the arrest of Jevon Lesley, 19, whom police say shot 18-year-old Anthony Fearn in July 2011 when a fight between battling gangs prompted Lesley to pull out a gun and start randomly firing, according to a story in the Joliet Herald News.

At the time, Fearn's death raised a lot emotions, in part because the victim was a Joliet West High School student who had no gang ties and worked part time at Kohl's and as an instructor at SUDA Mixed Martial Arts Academy, the story said.

The fight took place in August outside of Team Joliet KO Zone, a downtown Joliet boxing club and training gym at 218 E. Cass St. in downtown Joliet, which was the site of a murder this summer as well. In that case, club co-owner Jermain Bennett is accused of killing his business partner, Sean McGinn, of Lockport.

Lesley is currently incarcerated for a different crime at the Jackson Correctional Center and isn't schedule for parole until February 2013, the Herald News story said.

In an odd twist of fate, Lesley's 14-year-old brother was killed when their Lockport Township home was sprayed with bullets. The man convicted of that murder, Vernon McCormick, 24, is being sentenced today.
