A Joliet man was pistol-whipped when he tried to defend his sister from a man who was choking her, police said.

The alleged pistol-whipper, 24-year-old Ronald Hunter of Edison Road in Joliet, was charged with aggravated battery, aggravated domestic battery, aggravated assault, criminal trespass to state supported land, possession of ammunition without a firearm owner's identification card, and possession of a weapon by a felon.

Officers sent to a Rosalind Street residence met with the man Hunter allegedly hit with a pistol. The man reportedly told police Hunter stopped over about 6 p.m. Friday.

Hunter and the man's sister, with whom Hunter has three children, started to argue, police said. The man heard a commotion and when he went to check it out saw Hunter choking his sister, police said.

The man attempted to intervene and Hunter hit him in the head with a handgun, police said. Hunter then allegedly threatened them both with the gun before fleeing.

Hunter hid on nearby Englewood Avenue but was caught by the cops, police said. A search reportedly turned up a Taurus 9-mm pistol.
