Update: Joliet Man Shot Dead Sunday Night

The coroner's office says Devin Peete was declared dead at 7 p.m. at Silver Cross Hospital. The crime is being investigated as possibly gang related.

A Joliet man was killed Sunday night in an unicorporated area just outside the city, Will County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said.

Devin T. Peete, 21, was shot near Fairmount Avenue and Rosalind Street at about 6:25 p.m. and was declared dead at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox at 7 p.m., Hoffmeyer said.

Investigators would not release information on how many shots were fired, how many times the victim was struck or if the shooting was a drive-by.

It's possible the attack was gang-related, Hoffmeyer said. It is not known if it was in retaliation for an earlier incident, she said.

Investigators are tracking several leads, but no arrests had been made as of 3 p.m. Monday, she said.

Joliet police, initially thinking the shooting occurred within city limits, worked on the investigation for about four hours before determining that Will County had jurisdiction.

According to Will County jail records, Peete lived at 1310 Arthur in February 2011, when he was arrested on robbery and aggravated battery charges. He was also arrested in September 2010 for manufacture/delivery of cannabis, jail records show.
