Joliet Man Flees Cops & Crashes Car Into House After Gun Attack: Police

A Joliet teen and a 23-year-old were captured after trying to make a run for it from their wrecked SUV, police said.

Patrol officers watched a gun attack go down and then chased the shooter, who made a run for it after the sport utility he was riding in crashed into a house on Rowell Avenue, police said.

Both the shooter, an unidentified 17-year-old, and the wheelman, Quantrel Jones, 23, of 167 Wallace St., were taken into custody after the Sunday afternoon wreck, police said.

The teen was charged with the reckless discharge of a firearm, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and resisting or obstructing a peace officer. He was taken to River Valley Juvenile Detention Center.

Jones was charged with the reckless discharge of a firearm, aggravated fleeing and eluding, resisting or obstructing a peace officer, and obstructing justice. He was booked into the Will County jail.

Officers reportedly spotted the teen point a handgun out the passenger side window of a 1988 Chevy Suburban and open fire about 1 p.m. near the corner of Fourth and Miller avenues.

The Suburban then sped off, blowing through several stop signs before hitting a ditch near Rowell and New Lenox Road, then crashing into the house, police said.

The sport utility vehicle broke a hole in a basement wall, severed a gas line and knocked an air-conditioning unit over a few feet, police said.

Jones and the teen both tried to run from the car, police said. Jones was caught before he made it too far but the teen succeeded in getting a few blocks away before he was nabbed behind a house on Haven Avenue.

Both Jones and the 17-year-old explained to officers that the teen was shooting at someone in a car, police said, but did not identify who they were going after.
