Joliet Man Charged With Beating Girlfriend's Baby

The 13-month-old girl suffered internal injuries from the beating handed out by her mother's boyfriend, police said.

A Joliet man was charged with viciously beating his girlfriend's baby, leaving the child hospitalized with internal injuries.

Robert Walker, 27, of 362 N. Broadway was jailed Wednesday night on a charge of aggravated battery to a child. He faces up to 30 years in prison if found guilty of the class X felony.

Walker's girlfriend was troubled by her baby daughter's lethargy and brought the child to Silver Cross Hospital Tuesday afternoon, said Joliet police Lt. Brian Dupuis.

The 13-month-old girl suffers from a skin condition and the doctor at Silver Cross could not determine through an external examination whether she was bruised, police said. The child was then transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and further tests revealed she had internal injuries.

Further investigation, including questioning of the girl's mother, led police to determine Walker was the last adult to care for the baby, Dupuis said.

The young girl was expected to survive, according to police.
