Joliet Man Accused of Sexually Assaulting 13-Year-Old

Sheriff's police said it's not the first time Charles Cheffer has been investigated for similar crimes.

A 29-year-old Joliet man faces felony charges after allegedly sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl on two occasions, police said.

Charles Cheffer, 2411 Flower St., was arrested Thursday and charged with two counts of criminal sexual assault of a victim ages 13-17 and two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a victim more than five years younger, according to court records.

Will County Deputy Chief Ken Kaupas said the arrest came after an investigation into allegations that Cheffer had inappropriate contact with the girl on two occasions. According to jail records, the alleged incidents occurred in January and February of this year.

While this is the first time Cheffer has faced sex abuse charges, Kaupas said investigators learned that other agencies have looked at him for similar crimes.

He urged parents who know of other possible incidents involving Cheffer to contact the sheriff's department.

"If any other parents out there know this individual ... and could have information, even if it's not related to this case, they should reach out to the Will County Sheriff's Office" at 815-727-8575, Kaupas said.

Will County court records also show that Cheffer was found guilty in 2007 of delivering alcohol to a minor. In 2011, he was convicted on a child restraint violation charge, and in 2010, he was sentenced to three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on a burglary charge, according to court records.
