Joliet Currency Exchange Worker Stole Nearly $14,000, Police Say

Valentina Hernandez, charged with fraud and theft, allegedly cashed bad checks through her job and kept the cash, police said.

A Bolingbrook woman stole nearly $14,000 over the course of a year from the Collins Street Currency Exchange in Joliet where she worked, Joliet police said.

Valentina Hernandez, 49, of 104 N. Lancaster, was charged with felony theft and deception Wednesday following an investigation that showed she systematically wrote personal checks for amounts far higher than she had in her bank account and then cashed them at the 405 Ward Ave. business, Capt. Tab Jensen said.

The currency exchange contacted the police in early October after an internal audit turned up the pattern of irregularities dating back to at least December 2012, Jensen said.

"The currency exchange policy is that another employee must cash the checks" on behalf of another employee, he said, but that did not happen in this case.

Hernandez is being held in the Will County jail pending a bond hearing.
