Joliet Cops Find Hiding Gunman After Shooting: Police

A Joliet man tried to run and hide but the cops found him, police said.

The Joliet cops tracked down a hiding gunman after hearing shots on the near east side Saturday night, police said.

Jock TJ Simms, 21, of 508 Mohawk St. was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, possession of a firearm, defacing the identification marks on a firearm, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and resisting a peace officer in connection with the 9:30 p.m. incident that started on South Joliet Street.

Joliet Police Department tactical officers were leaving the station when they heard gunshots ring out. When they went to see what was going on, they spotted Simms holding a handgun, police said.

Simms made a break for it and tossed his gun along the way, police said. The officers reportedly caught Simms a short time later when he tried to hide on South Ottawa Street.

The police reportedly located a .380-caliber pistol that matched shell casings found on Joliet Street.  The handgun's serial numbers had been scratched off, police said.

When Simms was taken into custody, he was found to be in possession of an instruction manual for a .380-caliber pistol and a gun-cleaning kit, police said.
