Joliet Cops Charge 5 Teens In Connection With Saturday Shooting on Hickory Street

One of the five teens was caught hiding in the trunk of a car, police said.

The police linked a speeding carload of teens to an early Saturday morning gun attack on Hickory Street.

All five were arrested after the cops caught them near the corner of Fifth and Eastern avenues about 2 a.m.

Only one of the five—19-year-old Brandon Maiden of 611 S. Gordon Ave. in Kankakee—was identified by police. Maiden was charged with possession of cannabis, possession of a stolen firearm, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated discharge of a firearm, and the possession of a firearm without an owner's identification card.

Maiden was booked into the Will County jail. The other four teens were taken to River Valley Juvenile Detention Center. They were charges as follows:

  • A 13-year-old was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a firearm without an owner's identification card, and possession of a stolen firearm.
  • A 17-year-old was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, possession of a firearm without an owner's identification card, and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
  • A 17-year-old was charged with possession of a firearm without an owner's identification card and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
  • A 16-year-old was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, possession of a firearm without an owner's identification card, and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
The five were arrested after officers sent to investigate a report of shots fired in the 300 block of North Hickory Street spotted two cars speeding over the Jefferson Street bridge.

One of the cars, a gray Ford Escort, was carrying the five teens, police said.

Three of the teens were sitting in the Escort when the cops finally stopped it at Fifth and Eastern, police said, and a fourth was captured after fleeing on foot.

The fifth teen was found hiding in the trunk of the car, police said. Officers also reportedly located .40-caliber and .25-caliber handguns in the trunk.

A stolen .45-caliber handgun was hidden under a car seat, police said.
