Gun Charges Filed Against Trio Found in Parked Car: Police

A loaded gun found in the vehicle led to aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a firearm by a gang member charges, Joliet police said.

Joliet police were looking for car burglars but stumbled instead upon three people lying inside a car that smelled like pot and held a loaded .22-caliber handgun, Cmdr. Al Roechner said.

Officers were in the area of York Avenue and New Street at about 9:40 p.m. Saturday, responding to a call about suspects breaking into vehicles in the 100 block of York, when they decided to check cars parked in a government-owned parking lot on New Street, Roechner said.

They didn't find any burglars, but they did find two men and a woman reclining inside one of the vehicles, he said.

Although the car smelled of pot, no cannabis was recovered, he said. However, they did find the gun under the front passenger seat, Roechner said.

Arrested and charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of ammunition without an FOID card, and criminal trespass to state property were Deamontae D. Pruitte, 20, of 5915 Morgan, Chicago; Jacques D. Harris, 17, of 104 Wilcox, Joliet; and Jameka Simms, 23, of 118 York, Joliet.

Pruitte and Harris were also charged with possession of a firearm by a gang member. Pruitte was wanted on a Will County warrant.

All three remain in Will County jail, Harris and Simms in lieu of $1,500 bond and Pruitte in lieu of $10,000 bond.
