Girl, 14, Wanted to Scare Bullies with Fake Bomb Threat: Police

The threatening message was posted via Twitter Friday; worried Joliet West High School parents alerted officials, Joliet police said.

A 14-year-old girl who somehow thought announcing a bomb threat at Joliet West High School via Twitter would stop her brother from being bullied at school was arrested Monday for felony disorderly conduct/bomb threat.

The online message was posted Friday and school officials learned of it from parents, who asked what was being done to respond to it, Joliet Police Cmdr. Al Roechner said.

Police were notified and easily tracked the girl, also a student at Joliet West, through her Twitter account, Roechner said. She was taken into custody at school, 401 N. Larkin Ave.

"Her older brother goes to school (at Joliet West) and was being bullied, and she figured this was a way to scare them to make them stop," he said. "Her message was, 'I will bomb West high school.'"

The girl is being held in River Valley Juvenile Detention Center in Joliet pending her next court appearance, Roechner said.
