Friend of Victim in Double Murder Says 'They didn't Deserve to Die'

The four charged with last week's brutal double murder appeared in court as the families of two slain men wonder why they were killed.

The two young men and two young women charged with strangling two friends to death and then enjoying a night together without thought for the corpses in the house appeared in court for the first time with lawyers this afternoon.

Judge Roger Rickmon kept the bond for the four—Joshua Miner, 24, Adam Landerman, 19, Bethany McKee, 18, and Alisa Massaro, 18—at $10 million. The four appeared by video broadcast from the Will County jail. Landerman was the only one to speak beyond acknowledging they could hear and understand Judge Rickmon. Landerman told the judge he did not have a lawyer and was informed that he was being represented by the public defender.

Miner, Landerman, McKee and Massaro allegedly lured Eric Glover and Terrance Rankins, both 22, into Massaro's 1121 N. Hickory St. home and then strangled them to death. They planned to dismember Glover and Rankins, police said.

Cops were reportedly tipped off that there were bodies in Massaro's home. When they went to investigate, they saw the tip was solid, and also found Miner, Massaro and Landerman in the house playing video games with the corpses of Glover and Rankins nearby, police said.

After killing Rankins and Glover, said Joliet Police Chief Mike Trafton, Miner, Massaro, Landerman and McKee "continued the party atmosphere."

Detectives from the Joliet Police Department investigated the killings and arrested Miner, McKee, Massaro and Landerman, who is the son of Joliet police Sgt. Julie Larson.

No details of the killings were provided during this afternoon's bond hearing. Attorney George Lenard filed an appearance to represent Massaro and Charles Bretz filed for McKee. Public Defender Eric Berg took the cases of Landerman and Miner for his office.

After the hearing, one of Rankins' friends cried out about the senselessness of the killings.

"He just didn't deserve it," said the friend, Martin Williams. "Not him or Eric deserved it."

Williams said he was friends with Rankins throughout high school and also knew Glover.

"I just don't understand this whole situation," said Williams, who claims he and the group he was with were stopped from praying in the courthouse hallway.

"It hurt my heart," he said, adding, "They would not let us pray, bro."

Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow said he will prosecute the case himself.

"This is my home," Glasgow said. "My children live here."

Glasgow also cautioned against vigilante justice as he stood outside the Will County Courthouse, saying, "The proper place for prosecution and punishment is right here."

I don't think that random guys past in this matters Clutche considering he isn't a part of this case.
GlockG22Shoots40s January 14, 2013 at 09:06 pm
You may be right that it doesn't matter much, I'm sure Clutche is just showing the fact that they all seem to be from the same thread.... not comparing him to these animals mind you so don't even go there... just that the victims and this Williams character are not innocent upstanding citizens without a blemish... doesn't mean their bad I know, blah, blah, blah....
Treeman January 14, 2013 at 09:11 pm
A lot of people in Joliet have some kind of background. Regardless it shouldn't matter what Tboy or Eric did in their past. They are now dead. We should celebrate the little life they had rather then bring up past mistakes they had made.
CHILD OF GOD January 14, 2013 at 09:16 pm

Clutche January 14, 2013 at 09:40 pm
They may have stopped it because of the Supreme Courts rulings on Separation of Church and State. The Court House is a public domain as are Public Schools.
Clutche January 14, 2013 at 09:46 pm
It has absolutely nothing to do with the KKK.

Why do people always want to make everything a racial thing...I mean really come on...it only becomes that when you have people making it so...there are people of every race killed everyday by other races...it was a senseless murder no matter how you shake it up...let's not make it even for hateful and more disregarding of human life...
TB Plfd January 14, 2013 at 10:05 pm
every time you turn on the News its a black person killing a white person, it was very unusually to hear it be the other way around like this situtation.
Tina January 14, 2013 at 10:16 pm
I Haven't heard anyone from the victims famlies saying anything about race. And if anyone would have a right to assume that, it would be them.It does catch your attention that the victims were 2. Young black men and all 4 of the "suspects" were white. But it seems like that's just the facts. People - black and white want Justice for Eric and Terrance and that's what is important right now.
Resse J January 14, 2013 at 10:31 pm
clearly, you have no compassion nor understanding of the people involved in this case. From the victims, to the people who did this, all have mugshots, some even worse records than the victim. This is what is wrong with Joliet, the sergents son not mentioned, and should because his mother is a cop, also Miner, has a long rap sheet. Put those and comment on those as well Clutche and Gun holder
TB Plfd January 14, 2013 at 10:36 pm
Crimes like this is why Illinois needs the Death Penalty vs wasting taxes payers money on housing and feeding these animals and so on. that runs around 40k per immate per year.
Shantel Rose January 15, 2013 at 03:47 am
They deserve the the stiffest punishment allowable. Terrance was a good kid. He was full of life. Who's the brain surgeon posting mugshots? Can someone please explain the relevance? You are huge part of the problem. As if that should justify something horrific happening to another human being. No respect!
Rusty Shackleford January 15, 2013 at 02:25 pm
I agree Shantel, i pointed out b4 that it seems clutche and a few people are intent on posting links to mugshots about people who are irrelevant to this case as well as the victims when they are not on trial, and then u wonder y others are calling them racists, bigots etc... As if its not obvious they are sneak dissing without actually using offensive names we commonly are used to hearing.Basically stopping short of calling them no good thug n-words. Im surewe all have a family member who has made a bad choice legally, but we still love them regardless and hope for a new leaf to be turned over eventually. Its just disrespectful and it somewhat sheds some light into the content of their character. I guess what im saying is over the past few days ive come to see more and more that racial intolerance and hatred is alive and well on both sides of the aisle and it really manifests itself in cases like this and young Mr Travon Martin. Rodney King i believe was somewhat naive and premature in thinking we can all just "get along". It would be nice, but unfortunately as seen in our little town, people cant get past skin color and economic background differences to even focus on the issues at hand and the skepticism and assuming is only hurting us in this town as human beings, not just as separate races. Moreso the families of the victims and perpetrators of this terrible tragedy......
lala January 15, 2013 at 05:49 pm
Really? That was not necessary. His arrest is NOTHING compared to what these kids did. NO ONE deserved the fate of Rankins and Glover. Show some compassion...if you have any.
I. J. January 15, 2013 at 07:59 pm
I am going to disagree with you Rusty. I think most people DON'T have a family member who made a bad choice legally as you put it, and DON"T hang out on the corner all night, and DON'T associate with these sick murdering parasites of society. These guys are true victims and did not deserve to die at the hands of these individuals but do not imply that you can live any way you want and associate with the wrong people without consequence.
Rusty Shackleford January 15, 2013 at 09:10 pm
I.J. a legal choice can be underage drinking or smoking weed,or maybe ticket for driving with no license. It doesnt have to be a felony case. Thats what i meant by a bad legal choice. These guys are definitly not in that catergory, if thats what u thought i was implying.

Ironically, on multiple levels, I watched a two hour special the night before on the "helter skelter" murders 40 years ago. I have read a number of posts here and come to this,,,, While it is painfully obvious as well as TOO DAM EASY for us ALL to get caught up in the somatics of this incident...the bottom line is that NONE of these murders had nothing to to with race, color or creed outside of motivation. These people have no "value of LIFE". Be it their own or others. It is the decay and break down of main stream society due directly to the fact that our government "values", "they're" existence instead of condemning it. (to the grave) despite they're "withdrawls from society vs. "contribution" to it ! Even behind bars these these people are allow to continue AFFECT US long after they commit these crimes. Our GOVERNMENT (NOT the president...he is but a puppet on a throne) and THE MEDIA are responsible for these atrocities because one gives sanctuary to these "bad seeds" (putting it mildly) while the other one "waters" these seeds and spreads their disease like wild fire via internet, TV and radio. When I was in the Marine Corp. I learned a couple of key things very quickly...When in battle (or "life") If your existence was dependent on the man or men next to you, you didn't care what color skin they had or where they came from. NOR did I ! We "took care of each other" ...because we "valued" our lives and those we fought with. We were ALL "on the same team".
Realist January 16, 2013 at 06:43 pm
....When I went overseas, I got to hold starving babies in my arms. Babies that are naked for the first year or two of they're lives because there is no money to clothe them. In my years since I have seen the very same thing in our own country. People clinging to "life". Young and old. Sadly, I still don't understand how or why man though out time chooses to "kill" in order to settle disputes on any level. My point being..."life" is fragile. But we ALL "want" to live ! We ALL have a right to "live". Until you "take" life unjustly. So for me, it makes perfect sense to exterminate "with prejudice" ANYONE convicted of "failure to value and appreciate LIFE" to the point of murdering or even attempting to murder another human being. We obviously can't "just all get along". But we a ALL have the ability to walk away.
We ALL have 24 hours in a day. What we "choose" to do with that time is what defines us more than anything else. We have the power to "create" good choices... or bad. But with all the crap on TV these days I think we should ALL hope for the best but prepare for the worst.
eLAINE 10 January 20, 2013 at 04:21 pm
This case is horrific my heart goes out to the victims families. People choose to always want to bring up the record of black folk once thy've past. What does that mean? Just because you have a record doesn't justifiy someone taking your life.
What really matters in this case is two young men were killed and viciously. For what reason? LET GET TO THE CASE AT HAND AND PERSECUTE THE PEOPLE TO THE FULLIEST EXTEND OF THE LAW!!!!!

Maybe some new manhole lids with rubber rings to stop all the flooding of peoples houses,AndRead More actually climb down in the manhole and see if it is leaking instead of paying all of these people in Joliet getting flooded out by YOUR SANITARY System. Some paint being scrapped off the City Hall Hand Rails that will cut ya up.
