'Family is Family,' Accused Killer's Dad Says at Double Murder Hearing

But the fiancee of one of the victims was not so forgiving.

Friends and family of two men strangled to death in a Hickory Street house packed a courtroom for the alleged killers' arraignment this morning. But for the accused, only one man showed up for his child's day in court.

Bill McKee, father of 18-year-old Bethany McKee, was the only one in the gallery for the two young men and two young women charged with the Hickory Street double murder. McKee watched his daughter plead not guilty, endured the insults of a grieving fiancee, and then spoke of his own pain.

"It just sucks that whole families have to go through this," McKee, a Shorewood resident, said. "You can do the best job raising children, but you don't know what's going to come out.

"It's not the parents," said McKee, whose 18-year-old daughter did not stand or speak during her arraignment. Neither did her co-defendants—Alisa Massaro, 18, Joshua Miner, 24, and Adam Landerman, 19. Attorneys for the four entered pleas of not guilty to murdering Joliet men Eric Glover and Terrance Rankins, both 22. Massaro, Miner and Landerman are also Joliet residents.

A tip to police about a pair of dead bodies led officers to Massaro's house. The tip ended up on the money, police said, as the officers did find the two corpses, as well as Massaro, Miner and Landerman playing video games near the bodies.

McKee had already left, police said. She headed to Kankakee, where the police there captured her.

Massaro, McKee, Landerman and Miner were transported from the county jail for the hearing before Judge Gerald Kinney. All four were shackled at the wrist and ankle. Landerman, the son of Joliet police Sgt. Julie Larson, has apparently shaved his head since his arrest.

During the arraignment, Kinney said he is keeping the case on his call and set a pretrial hearing for March 1.

The arraignment was the first chance for friends and family of Glover and Rankins to see the accused killers in the flesh since the murders nearly a month ago.

"I was sickened—they look evil. They're demonic," said Heather Gossman, who was engaged to marry Glover. She said Glover proposed to her on Valentine's Day. She wears hear engagement ring and his high school class ring along with a cross around her neck.

"They just showed no emotion," Gossman said. "That Joshua kid looked like he was bored."

Gossman, who said her young daughter, Arianna, considered Glover her father and Rankins an uncle, recalled Glover calling her about 9 p.m. the night before the police found him dead with a bag over his head in Massaro's house.

When she did not hear from him again—and could not get a hold of him—she "called every hospital and jail in the area." She said she learned her fiance was dead by reading Joliet Patch.

"I'm pretty empty," Gossman said. "When he died, my heart died too."

Gossman said McKee invited Rankins to Massaro's house, and Rankins asked Glover to come along. She believes the murders were racially motivated.

"I'm saying yeah because I feel in my heart that my fiance and his friend were going to kick it with the white two," she said.

Gossman said she knew nothing of any of the four accused killers but for McKee, whose mother worked with her in the Walmart on Route 59 near Theodore Street.

Heartbroken by the loss of her fiance, Gossman shouted at Bill McKee after the hearing, saying, "You're a coward, just like your child."

Her outburst was not lost on McKee.

"I understand the anger of the families," he said. "I understand that."

Parents who have no morals or ethics might possibly be responsible for their adult children's behavior but there are many elements that impact their ultimate actions. These four show sociopathic behavior, Only they are responsible.

no thanks February 06, 2013 at 06:23 PM
i think it speaks volumes that only one parent showed up and it happened to be the parent of the suspect that left the scene and possibly alerted the police.
erin February 06, 2013 at 07:55 PM
Its not the parents fault. They raise their kids and when they turn a certain age; they go into society and learn and behave like other kids. Sure maybe the parents werent model citizens; but that doesnt mean that they are to blame. The 4 adults (Landerman, Massaro, McKee, Miner) are the only ones to blame. No one put a gun to their head and told them to do it. Their parents didnt tell them to wake up that day and go commit such a horrible crime.Their responsible for their own actions; disgusting as sad as they may be.
vicki February 06, 2013 at 08:11 PM
Let me ask you a question ...if you did everything possible for your child or children and they still went down that dark path, even if you try you can't stop them they are 18! Then they get involved with something like this...are you going to sit in the courtroom, watch them look like they don't care about past, present, or future? And then let the media destroy you even more for coming and every single move you made in the courtroom? Or take off work, where your barely making ends meet, and every court case drags on for ever! Asking your boss to have the day off to support your sociopathic mess of a child! I would never want to be wrapped up in this mess as a parent. We can do everything we can as parents, drugs, sex, money, will always have power some cannot say no too.
Single Mom February 06, 2013 at 08:33 PM
As parents, we TRY to be the best we can be......well most of us! We demand to know who our childrens friends are, where they are hanging out, set curfews, and the list is endless. There is no handbook that comes with your child at birth. You do the best you can. Teach them right from wrong, good from evil, and to be polite. You demand good if not decent grades and again the list goes on. But at some point your CHILD is responsable for his/her OWN decisions! A parent can only do and be so much. There a millions of kids growing up in this country that come from a very bad environment but they don't go out and commit a crime of this caliber!! At 18 you are responsable for your own actions and consequences and if you "can't do the time, don't do the crime"! These are not "kids". They are all 18 and over. They are ADULTS!!!!!

I'm a parent as well. and I could never imagine what I would feel if my child. commited such a horrible act but I'm not saying that it could not happen to me it very well could I would be devestated along with the families of these two boys you should never say never and never ever think that your children are not capable of this cause the mental mind can overpower anyone so rethink a lot of things before you pass judgment on anyone that is blaming the parent it could hit your front door we as humans do not know really. Because if we all knew what. Would happen we all would be prepared know wouldn't we god bless all that are in pain

pray February 07, 2013 at 09:51 AM
This is so serious...we need to pray for both families, and most of all don't forget to pray your child because you Dont know what your child is doing when they are away from you. Proverbs 22:6 train up a child...
TheTruth February 07, 2013 at 05:14 PM
Of course you think it's racial! I feel bad for the parties, but I don't believe it's racial.
Special Rex February 07, 2013 at 09:13 PM
@TheTruth, If that comment was directed toward me. Josh Miner, the killer. His ex, who lived with him and been with him for years. Explained that josh did not like blacks and she believed it was based on race. So, I won't argue with you. Google it, and take that up with her...

What game were they playing when cops found them so sad for the two young mens families
HAHAHA February 08, 2013 at 04:19 AM
Just horrible, I didn't know any of the victims but prayers to there families. May God rest there souls. May the courts take care of these animals.
TheTruth February 08, 2013 at 06:01 AM
@special rex, I'm aware he may have been a racist. I've read the story. But one of the females involved actually has a mixed child, and ALL parties were known to have friends of other colors. Information came from their Facebook pages. Check it out! Either way it was a brutal killing, and justice will be served. I just don't believe it was racially motivated is all.
Special Rex February 08, 2013 at 07:49 AM
Let me ask you something, what is a friend nowadays? A Person you speak with from time to time? We all have many of those. How many FRIENDS do you PERSONALLY hang out with on any given time off, AND close with? lets just say out of 20. Once you subtract that then, how many are best friends? Now those two numbers are the people that matter most. Everyone else is considered dispensable. That being said you wouldn't rob your best friends but maybe friends of friends. Or distant friends...more likely. And I knew plenty of people who had friends of different nationality and behind their backs, didn't like them or hated them because of the fact... Don't believe me? Just look at some of these race comments that people make ABOUT THE DEAD. These are the same people that claim to be righteous in their work lives. And when they are SAFE at home & log on to the computer its a different story... Lets just say it wasn't bro and hope this will bring us all closer. Enjoy your night.

This is only my opinion and what i was told my Willian Mckee and seen with my own eye's.......I know William Mckee and from what i was told by him and what i saw with my own eye's Bethany has had regular negetive contact with the shorewood police and alot of problem's with thier famialy, According to William Mckee she ran away from home and was kidnapped and used as sex slave's by gang member's, Because she was a minor all of her infraction's with the law was not on her adult record. In my opinion,Her troubled childhood was not only her fault but that of her parent's who either didn't care or gave up on thier children. While her parent's went camping all summer of 2013 and left the children home all alone only to check on them and buy food, They again return camping! The children were completly unsupervised! and As i was told by William Mckee one of thier children moved out of the home to live with a relevitive to escape the problem's created by bethany Mckee. It does not supprise me that something this bad happend, In my opinion she was a very troubled child and this crime or one as bad was a crime in the making, In my opinion She was a very troubled child and a poor upbringing didn't help at all, That is based on what was told to me by Willian Mckee and from what i have seen with my own eye's. THIS IS ONLY MY OPINION. And they are not guilty untill proven gulty.

Sad. All the way around. Waste of life and youth. The killers callousness and indifference is disgusting. This isn't about race, but disregard for human life. These young adults don't fear God, don't fear teachers, don't fear parents and don't fear police. Look at their defiant expressions in their booking photos. Lost souls.
julia February 23, 2013 at 06:48 AM
If you couldn't get ahold of your fiancee who normally answers ur calls or calls right back wouldn't you call the hospitals or jails cuz u r worried bout them cuz u haven't hear from them. And it doesn't matter y they went over to the house.....it sure wasn't to be murdered...and no matter how well the parents raised the 4 who did this, the parents r not the ones who did the crime....they r adults and have minds of their own.....they chose to do this not the parents....blame the 4 who killed 2 men who did not deserve to die the way they did.....rip eric and terrance
Bill McKee February 26, 2013 at 08:31 PM
This was not,I repeat not told to you by William Mckee !!!!! Please get your facts strait and stop lying just so you can add to the comment section. I know this to be a lie because it is me that you are slandering.

People are such idiots! Assumptions is all you've got with all of the hear say and whatever has done out in print on the internet and in the news. You would think that by now, genetically, we would have evolved to have brains enough to realize that NO ONE REALLY KNOWS ANYTHING YET! police cant reveal anything of they would blow their case. Real evidence or no real evidence... at this point, we all know NOTHING that is 100% for sure! Why are you picking through and rummaging for scraps of nothing? What a waste of time! All of you accusers are gossip kings and queens who think that all it takes is for someone to say it or print it for it to be true. Did you think the world was going to end last December? I bet you did!
Chris Ch March 02, 2013 at 06:50 PM
It is not anybody's fault but the ones that committed the crimes. Quit making excuses for people who do wrong. It's not their parents, it's not tv, it's not video games...it's them. They made the decision to go out and commit this heinous crime. I actually think McKee seems like a good parent. He called the cops on his daughter, but is there for her through thick or thin. She deserves to be punished for her crime, but it's his daughter - he can't just stop loving her. Direct your anger at the right people and quit giving people excuses for bad decisions.
Joy-let Resident. March 05, 2013 at 12:36 PM
what are you talking about? You blame the parents? I bet you hate guns to huh? You blame the existence of guns for every murder involving one?
Tom Terry March 08, 2013 at 06:00 AM
These four individuals are symbols of the evil and racial problems that our society is faced with. This heinous and diabolical act just shows that as a society we have failed. Its takes a whole community to raise a child.
blue April 23, 2013 at 06:04 PM
That comment, "You're a coward, just like your child," was completely incorrect. He was the only brave one there. He faced all the people who blame him for things that he did not do. He went for his daughter, but no one else's parents showed up, they are the cowards. Their children are monsters. This is a horrible story. All of the typos in the report are terrible. You would think that with how much this is viewed that the reporter would take the time to spell and grammar check with Microsoft Word.
Hartz May 01, 2013 at 03:34 AM
Blue, I have to agree. I can't imagine what all of the parents are going through. No matter what our children do, we love them unconditionally. I think people forget what that means at times. The parents who didn't go were most likely afraid for their lives or for the lives of their younger children. We will never know why they weren't there, but it may not have been because they're cowards. I couldn't even imagine what it took for mr McKee to go, but the love for his daughter is evident. There are many victims in this horrific ordeal, I hope they can all find some sort of peace one day.
