After 2 Ex-Cons Caught With Gun, 1 Tries to Slip Out Of Cop Car & Make A Break For It: Police

One of the men tried to toss away a pistol before his pal pulled over for police, cops said.

A pair of ex-convicts—one out of prison for less than five months—were picked up on weapons charges Thursday night.

One of the two men tried to toss away a pistol as the police were pulling them over and then tried to escape from a squad car, police said.

That man, 23-year-old Deondray Hall of 205 Reichman St. in Joliet, was charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, possession of a firearm by a street gang member, possession of a stolen firearm, attempting to escape, obstructing a peace officer and possession of cannabis.

The other man, Stephen Hayes, 23, of 531 Pasadena Ave. in Crest Hill, was charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of cannabis.

Hayes was behind the wheel of a Hyundai Santa Fe police tried to pull over about 7:15 p.m. near the corner of Boulder Avenue and Washington Street.

As the cop car was catching up, Hall tossed a .380-caliber pistol out of the sport utility vehicle, police said. Officers reportedly recovered the weapon from the street with a single bullet still in the clip.

After Hayes and Hall were taken into custody and placed in a squad car, Hall managed to undo his seatbelt, police said. When the officer who was driving stopped the squad, Hall allegedly opened his door and took off running, but did not get far.

Hayes was released from prison in May 2013 after serving a three-year sentence for a drug conviction. Hall was paroled in January after doing time on drug, burglary and weapons convictions.
