Drunk Man Beats Paramedics Trying to Help Him, Police Say

Fire department personnel were trying to get Ronald Mau into an ambulance when he became belligerent, Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said.

A Joliet man so intoxicated that he was refused entrance to a homeless shelter struck two firefighter paramedics who attempted to help him, Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said.

Ronald I. Mau, 55, arrived at Daybreak Center, 611 E. Cass St., at about 10:25 p.m. Dec. 31 but was deemed too drunk to be allowed in, Benton said. The Joliet Fire Department was called to take Mau -- described as "babbling incoherently" -- to the hospital, he said.

Joliet police were called after Mau became belligerent when asked to sit in a specific spot in the ambulance, Benton said. One firefighter was pushed in the chest and another punched in the face, he said.

A struggle ensued before firefighters and police officers were able to subdue Mau enough to get him to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox for observation, Benton said. He was later released and charged with aggravated battery, and is being held in the Will County jail in lieu of $50,000 bond.

Mau has a long arrest record in Will County on a variety of charges, including battery, assault, criminal trespass, theft, resisting arrest, transporting alcohol and driving on a revoked/suspended license. He has been arrested three times for driving under the influence of alcohol, Will County court records show.
