Unusual First Name Helps Cops Track Alleged Shooter

Joliet police said they had only the first name of "Dillon" and a general description of his clothing and SUV when seeking a suspect in a drive-by house shooting.

The victim could tell Joliet police this much about the man who shot up his house Monday afternoon:

The suspect's first name was "Dillon," he was dressed from head to toe in black -- including the bandana around his face -- and he drove a black Nissan SUV.

Not much to go on, but enough for investigators to cull a potential name from their data base of known gang members and to set up surveillance on a house at 1623 Cleveland, Cmdr. Brian Benton said.

When Dillon R. Adair, 18, pulled up to his home in a black SUV at about 2:45 p.m., decked out in the same dark clothing he allegedly wore when he fired a round of bullets into a house in the 400 block of State Street, police thought they had their man, Benton said.

It was further corroborated when he took off on foot upon seeing the officers, who stopped him in the 1700 block of East Maple Street, and found a black bandana in his vehicle, Benton said.

Police also discovered the SUV he was driving had been stolen from Chicago a few months ago, he said.

Adair was arrested and charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a stolen motor vehicle and possession of a firearm without a valid FOID card.

Adair is being held in the Will County jail pending a bond hearing.
