Crossing Guard Struck Outside of Joliet School

Police said the driver of the pickup truck said he did not see the guard standing in the crosswalk.

A crossing guard was taken to Silver Cross Hospital with minor injuries Tuesday after being struck by a pickup truck outside of a Joliet elementary school, police said.

Joliet Cmdr. Al Roechner said the guard, a 56-year-old woman, was hit as she stood in a crosswalk outside T.E. Culbertson Elementary School, 1521 E. Washington St.

William Haire, the 65-year-old driver of the 1995 Ford F-150, was turning west onto Washington from Briggs Street when he struck the woman, Roechner said. He told police he did not see her standing in the crosswalk.

The crash happened at around 8:36 a.m., just before school was set to begin at 9 a.m. No children were injured in the incident.

Roechner said the crossing guard was transported to the New Lenox hospital after complaining of body pain.

Haire was cited for disobeying a crossing guard, as well as having improperly tinted windows and a cracked windshield, police said.
