Joliet Councilwoman's Granddaughter Killed in Arkansas Robbery

Funeral services will be held in Joliet Thursday for Akiya Egeston, granddaughter of Joliet City Councilwoman Susie Barber.

Funeral services will be held Thursday for the granddaughter of Joliet City Councilwoman Susie Barber, who was killed Sept. 22 in an Arkansas convenience store robbery.

Akiya Egeston, 29, a Joliet native and Joliet Central High School graduate, was a clerk at the North Little Rock store where the robbery occurred, according to a story in the Joliet Herald News. She is survived by her husband and two sons, ages 6 and 9.

Three suspects have been arrested and charged in the murder, according to an online story by news radio station KARN-FM. Police say the three men left the store after being unable to open the safe, but one returned and shot Egeston, the story said.

Services for Egeston will be held at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Missionary Baptist Church, 1404 S. Briggs St., Joliet. She will be buried at Elmhurst Cemetery in Joliet.
