Update: Woman, 83, Crashes Car through Walgreen Front Entrance

The woman told police that her foot accidentally slipped off the brake pedal to the accelerator, causing her to drive into the store's vestibule.

Update/ 11:10 a.m. Friday:

A woman attempting to pull into a handicapped space at a Walgreens store accidentally stepped on the accelerator and propelled her car over the concrete parking barrier and into the store's sliding glass doors Wednesday night, Joliet Police Cmdr. Al Roechner said.

The woman, 83, was not injured, nor was anyone in the store, located at the corner of Jefferson and Reed streets, he said. The woman told officers that her foot slipped off the brake, he said.

The store reopened for business Thursday.

Original story/posted at 8 p.m. Wednesday:

A car that crashed through the entrance of the Walgreens at Jefferson and Reed streets Wednesday forced the early closure of the store but did not result in any injuries, the store manager said.

Although he declined to speak in detail, the manager did confirm that the store at 1163 W. Jefferson St. was forced to close for security reasons and would reopen Thursday once the frame was boarded up and a temporary entrance could be created.

Joliet police handled the incident but reports were not available Wednesday night. Joliet Patch will update the story when more information becomes available.
