Boy, Dog Rescued from Hot Car; Mom Ticketed

Joliet police say the 8-year-old's mother left him and their pet pit bull in her vehicle while she was visiting someone in the Will County jail.

A Joliet woman who left her 8-year-old son and a pit bull in a sweltering car while she went to visit someone at the Will County jail was arrested Sunday afternoon, Joliet Police Cmdr. Al Roechner said.

The boy and dog were spotted by a Joliet police officer at about 3:40 p.m. inside a vehicle parked in a lot at 20 S. Chicago St., Roechner said. The pair were moved into an air-conditioned squad car while officers went in search of Dietra F. Jones, 36, of 912 Raynor Ave., who was found inside the jail with her 14-year-old daughter, he said.

The woman was given a compliance ticket and ordered to be in court on Aug. 12. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services were also called to investigate the woman and her children, Roechner said.

According to the National Weather Service in Romeoville, the 4 p.m. Sunday temperature was 89 in Joliet.
